Can I hang wallpaper over any surface?

The ideal surface on which to hang wallpaper is a clean, primed and sized wall from which all previous wallpaper has been removed. Notwithstanding, we realize that is not always possible. While not ideal, it is sometimes possible to hang wallpaper over existing wallpaper, but we recommend to remove any previous wallpaper. If the existing wallpaper is thin, smooth, straight and is well stuck to the surface, you could install your new wallpaper over it. If you want to remove the old wallpaper, a good hint is to moisten it with steam or hot water.

Our wallpapers can be installed over any irregular surface, if the gaps are not very sharp (2,5 cm or less). In this case, you can use a heavy duty lining paper that is designed to bridge gaps in irregular surfaces and create a consistent base on which to install wallpaper. York Wallcoverings` Wonder Cover lining paper is a superior grade liner that has the unique characteristic of being ‘pre-sized’ which eliminates the need to size the lining paper before installing your decorative wallpaper.

In low adherence surfaces, we recommend to carry out preliminary tests in order to verify the correct absorption, adherence and performance of the paste and wallpaper. We recommend to use a special paste, although it should be applied very carrefully, because it is far more aggressive than a regular paste and it could damage the paper. Consequently, we strongly recommend not to install wallpapers over shiny / glossy surfaces.
